About The Crazy Family & Takashi Ito Shorts – Film Screening
Get ready for a wild evening at Leith Kino as we screen the frenetic black comedy The Crazy Family (1984), a subversive takedown of the traditional middle-class Japanese family system from one of the country’s seminal punk directors, Gakuryu Ishii. Gradually deconstructing societal expectations amidst the heightened capitalism of 1980s Japan until everything descends into full-blown chaos, Ishii’s film is at once hilarious, grotesque, and surprisingly sweet.
The Crazy Family is bookended by kinetic visual effects sequences by Takashi Ito, one of Japan’s most influential experimental filmmakers. Before the film, we’re proud to be showing two radical short stop-motion animations by Ito: GRIM (1985) and ZONE (1995). This is one of the few chances to catch a screening of these rare works in the UK, which showcase Ito’s unique and unforgettable capacity for crafting atmospheres of domestic dread.
Tickets cost £6 and we have allocated handful of free tickets for those not in a position to pay (available here). Please support your local Leith Kino!
